big days for Katie

Yesterday was the Science Fair at Katie's school. She likes to do science experiments with Mommy, so we came up with an idea to grow salt, sugar and Borax crystals and see which worked best.

We made some snowflake shapes out of pipe cleaners for the crystals to grow on, and also tried paperclips. We made supersaturated solutions and suspended the snowflakes and paperclips in them for a couple of days.

Katie's findings were that the Borax solution made the biggest crystals in the shortest amount of time.

Mommy taught her how to write up her findings for a poster, then she did all of the writing and we affixed everything to the poster board.

On Science Fair night, the whole family got to see all of the participating students' projects. There was a tremendous variety! (This was optional for most grades.) You know our Katie, she loved showing everyone (friends and their families) her project and telling them all about it!

Katie told me that they alternate years - one year they hold a Science Fair, the next year they hold a Talent Show. I am sure that they do this so different kids can have a showcase. It made me chuckle to myself, because those are my two favorite activities!

Tonight, Katie lost another tooth! It's the first premolar she has lost, so it's a big one and the space underneath feels distractingly weird. She is looking forward to telling her friends!

She also commented that she is glad that it fell out before First Communion because now she doesn't have to worry about it falling out during the ceremony! She has a one-track mind right now. We're all getting our outfits ready and getting excited!

Wow Katie, your project looks really cool. You really did a great job of putting together your display too. I'm proud of you.

Great job Katie. Loved how you backed all your titles with colored paper and laid it all out so neatly! I am looking forward to you teaching me all about crystals....I don't know that much about them! See you in a few days for your very special day! xxoo Noni
